The town of Charlestown in South County, RI is a popular summer destination, but come fall, it’s even more glorious. The beaches are quiet, inviting long walks and time for contemplation, while dramatic sunsets put on a breathtaking show. Though the pace is slower, the area is still alive with wonderful places to eat, shop, and settle in for a cozy autumn weekend in New England.

Shopping

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is a whimsical collection of shops, gardens, and meandering paths that lead to a bamboo forest. Along the way, you’ll encounter peacocks and emus, a candy store, a toy store, a unique garden shop, and plenty of other unexpected treasures.

Just down the road from the workshop site, Refind Modern is a favorite for mid-century furnishings, art, and the many wonderful tchotchkes that bring back that wonderful era in style and design.

Simple Pleasures is a coastal-inspired boutique with jewelry, accessories, clothing, and local art.

Other Adventures

Just five minutes from the workshop site at Ninigret Park, discover two of recycled-art artist, Thomas Danbo’s magical, larger-than-life trolls.

Visit Wakefield for clothing boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, a glass blowing studio, and museums.

Slightly farther afield, Newport, RI, Warwick, RI, and Mystic. CT are brimming with literary, nautical, and New England Charm. Wander historical streets, browse independent bookstores and galleries, or linger over lunch by the water. All three make great half-day trips.

The Matunuck Oyster Bar is a destination seafood restaurant that has been named one of the best in the country by USA Today.

If you happen to be visiting Taylor Swift at her beach house in Watch Hill, don’t miss the cozy-meets-luxurious Ocean House right down the street. Enjoy a drink or a meal by the roaring fire, while gazing out at the Atlantic.

General Stanton Inn has an historic New England charm and warmth. The restaurant has been named “best of Rhode Island”.
